November 2010

Bishop Christopher to visit St Giles

On Sunday 28th of November, Bishop Christopher will be attending a service of Confirmation at St Giles at 6pm. Bishop Christopher has recently been nominated to become the new diocesan Bishop of Southwark and will be enthroned at Southwark Cathedral in the early part of 2011. Needless to say, Bishop Christopher's visit is an important occasion and our choir and musicians hope to make the service a very special one for everyone, especially the people who will be confirmed in our church. Please come and support us if you can.

November is shaping up to be another busy month. St Giles' choir have already begun rehearsals for Advent and Christmas services. They are also excited to be going to see Harry Potter and the deathly hallows on a choir trip!

And at the end of the month, Luci Briginshaw and friends will be singing at a concert on the 30th of November at 7pm. Lot's to look forward to!

September & October 2010

Harvest Festivals, Car Washes,

Nigerian Independence Day and a 'Save the date'!

In September, St Giles' choir rolled up their cassocks to wash cars outside church! The choir had had a very busy day already, singing at the harvest festival service. But they did a fantastic job and at the end of the car wash, 14 cars were left sparkling clean! £70 was raised towards the choir fund - thank you to everyone who took part.

On the 3rd of October, St Giles' choir was back in action again singing an authentic Nigerian chant as part of the Nigerian Independence Day celebrations. It was a great day with much dancing in the aisles afterwards!

On Tuesday 30th of November, we have a save the date! The soprano Luci Briginshaw will be performing in church. Luci was part of our concert series earlier in the year and sang so beautifully that we wanted to invite her back! This time, Luci will be bringing some friends along - more details to follow soon.

August 2010
Still working hard!

Whilst most of our choir is on holiday, some of our choristers are working very hard on the RSCM's Dark Blue Level course. The course is designed so that singers can improve both their singing and their musical understanding. It's not easy but the reward is a new medal which choristers can wear on Sundays. Good luck to Roshelle, Lizzie, Isi, Jessica, Tope, Rachel, Feyi, Anne-Marie, Sylvia, Louise, Shannon and Claudine!

The first full rehearsal after the holidays is on Friday 3rd September at 7.15pm. This will be followed by a Choir Meeting at 8.15pm - Choir members and parents are invited to attend.

June & July 2010

A busy Summer and a celebration for Les!

Our very first June Concert Series was one of the most successful musical events St Giles' has ever hosted. The concerts were very well attended and concert goers were treated to some very fine performances, ranging from Palestrina to Brahms and Puccini to Britten. We intend to repeat the concerts next year and look forward to a successful 2011 series.

At the start of July, the choirs of St Giles' and St Luke's came together to sing choral evensong. This was the first choral evensong at St Giles' for many years and it was a very special one - as it gave us chance to say thank you to Les Alden, who has been a member of St Giles' Choir for 50 years!

Les has shown an extraordinary dedication to St Giles' Church and always has time for the children of the choir where he acts as both a mentor and a reminder that belonging to a choir adds richness to life. The music team wish him well and look forward to many more years of his singing!

Many members of St Giles' choir have now left to join other choristers from around the country at Morlands Choristers' Camp. This is an opportunity all members of our choir have the chance to go on - it's a terrific experience to sing beautiful music in some awesome places - and make lots of new friends too!

May 2010

The Friends' of St Giles and the music team welcome you to our 2010 concert series.

Although St Giles' has always welcomed musicians to perform in church, this is the first series of concerts we've ever arranged. Being so close to central London, it's difficult to compete with all the variety and glamour on offer there. But that's why we've tried to make our concerts as informal as possible and why each concert should last around an hour. They should be perfect for listening - and relaxing to - some great music after work, having a drink(s) with some friendly banter and then off to bed!

All concerts are free entry although you are welcome to make a donation. Wine and soft drinks are available to buy afterwards.

We have a fantastic - and varied - programme of concerts. Luci Briginshaw kicks off our concert series with her awe-inspiring voice.  The week after we have some romantic clarinet and piano music followed by music from Greece with the famous SOAS Rebetko Band. Rohan Kriwaczek and his introduction to the funerary violin is a must see - and we finish our concerts with some magical music in a candle-lit church with Siglo de Oro.

www.musicatstgiles.com - Your new website

St Giles is a very musical place. Jazz Live takes place every Friday evening in the crypt below the church and has firmly established itself as one of the best places to hear live jazz south of the river. Camberwell Choir School, which meets every Saturday in the church hall, was set up by a former vicar of St Giles and allows children of all ages to learn musical skills whilst having fun. And every Sunday, St Giles Choir sings at the morning service in church and at special services throughout the year.

The aim of this new website is to bring you the latest news from all our musical organisations and publicise musical events at St Giles throughout the year.  It will also show how you can help make St Giles an even better place to hear, participate in and learn about music.

We hope the site will develop and grow - and we're always interested in your feedback.
